Ellenville man charged with burglary after armed home invasion attempt

ELLENVILLE — The Ellenville Police Department responded to a reported armed home invasion/burglary in progress at an occupied residence at 6 Mill Street in the Village of Ellenville at about 5:47 a.m. this morning.

As police arrived at the residence they were advised that the suspect had fled north on Mill Street to Center Street.

Police immediately canvassed the area, and after a short time located a subject matching the description at the Valero Gas station located on Route 209.

A further interview of the subject led to police recovering a large knife and a security camera that had been reported stolen from the window of the residence.

The subject was arrested and brought back to Ellenville police headquarters where he gave police a full statement regarding the incident.

The investigation revealed that the suspect had climbed up onto a small porch roof where he took his knife and removed the security camera from the window and then smashed out the window in order to gain entry.

However, he was confronted by the occupants of the residence, and he then began to stab at them through the window.

He was scared off when one of them called 911.

The suspect is identified as Brian Ventura, also known as Sosa, age 27 of Ellenville.

He is charged with burglary in the first degree, a Class B felony, and one count each of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, all misdemeanors.

He was arraigned in CAP court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of bail and is returnable to Town of Wawarsing court on Friday July 25 at 8:30 a.m.

Ellenville Police were assisted by the New York State Police in Wawarsing.
