75-year-old hiker rescued from 90-foot drop in Middlesex gully

MIDDLESEX — A 75-year-old woman from Pittsford was rescued Friday morning after spending nearly 12 hours trapped in a 90-foot-deep gully following a hiking accident.

The Yates County 911 Center received a call for help at 7:50 a.m. July 18 from the woman, who had fallen into Clark’s Gully during an afternoon hike the previous day.

The hiker became separated from her phone during the fall on July 17.

She was able to locate her phone in the early morning hours of July 18 and called for assistance.

Rescuers from multiple agencies used the phone’s location to find and extract the woman from the gully.

She was flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of possible head and neck injuries as well as exposure.

The rescue involved personnel from Naples Fire, Naples Ambulance, Dundee Fire Rope Rescue, Middlesex Fire Rope Rescue, Rushville Fire, Yates County Office of Emergency Management and the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.
