Dover man charged with felony after fleeing police, suspected drug impairment

DOVER — A 44-year-old Dover man was arrested early Tuesday morning after fleeing from state police and showing signs of drug impairment.

Eric P. Oakes was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree, a class E felony, along with several misdemeanors following the incident that began at approximately 2:11 a.m.

Troopers from the New York State Police Dover barracks attempted to stop Oakes’ 2017 Buick SUV for vehicle and traffic law violations in the Town of Dover.

Oakes failed to comply with emergency lights and sirens, leading to a brief pursuit.

The vehicle came to a stop in the parking lot of the Mobil gas station at 1782 Route 22 in Wingdale.

Oakes was the sole occupant and displayed signs of impairment when taken into custody.

He was transported to SP Dover for processing, where he refused evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert and declined to provide a blood sample to determine drug content.

In addition to the felony charge, Oakes was charged with unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, driving while ability impaired by drugs, reckless driving, and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.

Oakes was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Town of Dover Court on August 7 at 5:00 p.m.
