DELHI — A 44-year-old Sidney man has been extradited from Texas and charged with first-degree rape in connection with a July 2024 incident.

Chad Walters of Unadilla was indicted Jan. 23 on charges of rape in the first degree, a Class B violent felony, Delaware County District Attorney Shawn J. Smith announced.

Walters is accused of forcibly raping a physically incapacitated woman at the victim’s home in Sidney on July 27, 2024.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Richard D. Northrup Jr. presented the case to a grand jury, which returned a sealed indictment.

Delaware County Court Judge John L. Hubbard issued a warrant for Walters’ arrest.

Sidney police attempted to locate Walters but discovered he was already wanted on unrelated charges in Otsego County.

After an extensive investigation, Sidney police located Walters in San Antonio, Texas.

Detective Sergeant Christopher Dionne and Officer Austin Wheeler traveled to San Antonio and took Walters into custody July 9.

The officers returned Walters to the Delaware County Correctional Facility at 12:30 a.m. July 11.

Walters was arraigned July 11 before Judge Hubbard, who unsealed the indictment.

If convicted, Walters faces up to 25 years in state prison.

Hubbard remanded Walters to the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond.
