FALL RIVER — Police and fire officials responded to a reported fire at The Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility on Oliver Street at approximately 9:40 p.m. Sunday.
Patrol officers arrived first and observed heavy smoke billowing from the building.
Officers entered the smoke-filled facility, breaking down doors and escorting residents to safety.
Approximately a dozen non-ambulatory residents were physically carried out by officers.
Fall River firefighters arrived and brought the fire under control.
Fall River EMS transported multiple injured individuals to area hospitals.
The volume of medical needs required mutual aid from surrounding communities.
Medical staff from St. Anne’s Hospital responded to the scene to assist with patient transport and care.
The scene remains active and secured by public safety personnel.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fall River Police Department and Fall River Fire Department.
