Portland police clear suspicious package on State Street

PORTLAND — The Portland Police Department was alerted to a suspicious “pelican case” with concerning writing on the exterior indicating that the case was explosive, in front of 188 State Street on July 14 at 8:27 a.m.

The department’s Hazardous Device Unit was called in to evaluate and investigate the suspicious item.

After x-rays were taken, it was determined the box did not include any hazardous materials, and the box was disposed of.

The scene was cleared at 10:15 a.m. and traffic in the area returned to normal.

There were no threats made to any establishment and the case was determined to be benign, so no charges are anticipated to be filed.
