PHIPPSBURG — Deputies located a 26-year-old woman in crisis at Popham Beach on July 9 following a welfare check call from her concerned ex-boyfriend.
The Sagadahoc County Communications Center received the call at 7:35 p.m. from a Massachusetts man worried about his ex-girlfriend’s wellbeing.
The caller reported the woman was in crisis and possibly in danger of self-harm, according to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.
The man had been talking with the woman but lost cellphone connection, officials said.
The woman was believed to be in the Popham Beach area, possibly near Hunnewell Beach.
Communications staff kept the caller on the line while pinging the woman’s cellphone to determine her location.
Corporal Michael Fitzpatrick and Deputy Alex Faith were dispatched to search for the woman.
Deputies located the woman’s vehicle near Spinney’s Restaurant using a description and license plate number provided by the caller.
Deputy Faith searched along Hunnewell Beach while cellphone data confirmed the woman had been in that area.
Corporal Fitzpatrick searched from the opposite end near Fort Popham.
After searching for more than 30 minutes, deputies found the woman as the sun was setting, making visibility challenging.
The woman was alert and appeared to be in good physical condition, but deputies determined she was in crisis after interviewing her.
Officials said she had intended and likely attempted to harm herself.
She was transported to Mid Coast Hospital for evaluation and her safety.
