2 Portage residents arrested on felony burglary charges

PORTAGE — Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of two Portage residents on felony charges following an investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.

On July 3 at approximately 3:12 p.m., the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office responded to an address in the Town of Portage to investigate allegations of a burglary.

Livingston County Deputies met with the victim, who advised that someone had broken into his residence and other outbuildings on the property.

The victim reported that he was missing numerous items that were valued at over $7,600.

On July 8, Sheriff’s Investigator Martin Herkimer arrested Ryan Ellis.

It is alleged through the investigation that Ellis, age 43, committed the burglary.

Ellis was charged with one count of felony Burglary in the Second Degree and one count of felony Grand Larceny in the Third Degree.

On July 9, Investigators and Patrol Deputies located and arrested Shaun Theriault after a traffic stop.

It is alleged through the investigation that Theriault, age 44, committed the burglary at the residence as well with Ellis.

Investigator Herkimer charged Theriault with one count of felony Burglary in the Second Degree and one count of felony Grand Larceny in the Third Degree.

Investigator Herkimer additionally charged Theriault with one count of felony Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, one count of Criminal Possession of a Firearm, one count of felony Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree, fourteen counts of felony Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, four counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, and one count of Possession of Burglar Tools as a result of the traffic stop.

Both Ellis and Theriault were later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part at the Livingston County Jail before the Town of Leicester Justice Durbin.

The District Attorney’s Office recommended that Ellis be held on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.

The Judge remanded Ellis to the custody of the Sheriff on the recommended bail.

The Judge remanded Theriault to the custody of the Sheriff on no bail due to him having two or more prior felony convictions.

The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office was present and represented Ellis and Theriault at the court arraignments for their defense.

The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office also appeared to represent the People.
