SPRINGFIELD — Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit West and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department seized a large-capacity loaded firearm and more than 13 grams of crack and powder cocaine Wednesday.
The arrest occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. in the Federal Street, Summit Street and Worthington Street area.
Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit detectives have been conducting enhanced enforcement in the area to deter illegal drug distribution and firearms activity.
Detectives were conducting surveillance Wednesday afternoon when they observed an individual with a cross-body bag conduct a suspected drug deal in a Summit Street parking lot.
Detectives, deputies and troopers then moved to detain the suspect, who was later identified as a 17-year-old male.
Inside his cross-body bag, detectives recovered a loaded large-capacity firearm with 13 rounds of ammunition.
Detectives also recovered approximately 5.9 grams of powder cocaine and approximately 7.5 grams of crack cocaine inside the bag.
The juvenile was placed under arrest.
Due to his age, the suspect’s name and booking photo will not be released.
