MONTPELIER, VT — Police arrested a man Saturday afternoon following a disturbance at the National Life Do Good Fest after he allegedly assaulted security personnel and law enforcement officers attempting to remove him from the event.

At approximately 8:01 p.m., National Life security personnel identified an intoxicated and belligerent individual inside the event venue who needed to be removed for the safety of attendees.

As security officers attempted to make contact, the individual attempted to evade them by entering the densely packed crowd gathered near the front of the concert stage.

When security personnel followed him into the crowd, the individual became physically combative and assaulted security officers.

Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Montpelier Police officers assigned to event security immediately responded to assist.

Following a brief struggle, the individual — identified as Matthew Adams, 35, of Essex Junction — continued to actively resist arrest, striking and biting law enforcement officers before being taken into custody.

Adams was transported for processing and screened for intoxication, where he was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 0.16%, twice Vermont’s legal limit for operating a motor vehicle.

He was subsequently lodged at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury until sober.

Adams was cited to appear in the Criminal Division of the Washington County Superior Court on a later date to answer to the following charges: disorderly conduct, simple assault, simple assault on a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest.

Despite this isolated incident, the Do Good Fest remained a safe and successful event for the thousands of attendees who came together to support charitable causes and enjoy the day.

The Montpelier Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to National Life Security, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Montpelier Fire and Ambulance Service for their professionalism, teamwork, and rapid response.
