Driver dies in crash on Route 115 in North Windham

NORTH WINDHAM, ME — A driver died after crashing into an apartment building on Route 115 early Saturday morning, causing a gas leak and evacuations.

Emergency responders from the Windham Police Department, Windham Fire/Rescue and utility partners responded to the single-vehicle crash at 7:41 a.m. on Route 115, also known as Tandberg Trail.

The vehicle crossed the center line, left the roadway and struck an apartment building, according to police.

The vehicle hit the building’s natural gas meter, causing a significant gas leak.

The affected building and several nearby residences were evacuated as a precaution while emergency personnel secured the scene.

Route 115 was temporarily closed to traffic.

An emergency power disconnection was conducted in portions of North Windham to ensure the safety of residents, first responders and utility crews.

The driver died at the scene.

The identity of the driver and vehicle information are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation.
