Man arrested in shooting incident in Utica

UTICA, NY — A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred June 21 in the 1500 block of Nielson Street.

Utica Police units were dispatched to the area at approximately 8 p.m. regarding a report of a large fight and shots being fired.

A Utica Police officer was struck by a bottle and injured during the incident.

Investigators with the GIVE Unit determined that nine spent .22 caliber shell casings were located at the scene and that a vehicle was also struck by a projectile.

Through the review of officer body worn camera footage, private surveillance footage and information learned from individuals on scene, investigators were able to identify a suspect.

Yomar Morales-Colon, 20, of Utica, was apprehended without incident June 29 with the assistance of the Tactical Unit.

Morales-Colon was transported to the Utica Police Department and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment in the first degree.
