Lowell man charged with DUI resulting in death after passenger killed in rollover

LOWELL — A 22-year-old woman was killed and the driver was charged with DUI with death resulting after a side-by-side utility vehicle rolled over on a Lowell road late Thursday night, Vermont State Police said.

Maddison Hayden, 22, of Woodbury was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Newton Road near Cheney Road in Lowell. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The operator, Randy Lemieux II, 27, of Lowell, was driving a 2021 Polaris RZR side-by-side when the vehicle overturned on the gravel road at about 10:23 p.m., according to police. Lemieux was wearing a seat belt and reported no injuries.

Troopers observed indicators of impairment while interacting with Lemieux and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said. Speed is also believed to be a factor in the crash.

Lemieux was lodged at the Northern State Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail with conditions of release imposed by the court. He was scheduled to appear today at 12:30 p.m. in Orleans Criminal Court on a charge of DUI with death resulting.

The Vermont State Police Derby barracks, the Lowell Fire Department and Newport Ambulance Service responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
