Three arrested in assault in Heuvelton

HEUVELTON, NY — Members of the New York State Police responded to State Street in the village of Heuvelton on May 18, 2026, at approximately 11:39 p.m. for a report of an assault.

An investigation determined that a female victim was walking in the area when she became involved in a verbal and physical altercation with several individuals.

During the incident, the victim was struck, causing the victim to fall to the ground.

As a result of the fall, the victim’s cellular phone was damaged.

Troopers utilized surveillance footage from the surrounding area and were able to identify the individuals involved.

The individuals were identified as Bruce A. Cayea, 40, of Fort Covington; Makenzie R. Cayea, 30, of Fort Covington; and Eric L. Brothers, 41, of Heuvelton.

Further investigation revealed that Brothers and the victim are involved in an active stay-away order of protection, with the victim listed as the protected party.

Brothers was interviewed and subsequently arrested on May 19, 2026.

During a search incident to arrest, troopers discovered Brothers to be in possession of narcotics.

He was transported to SP Ogdensburg for processing and charged with Criminal Contempt 2nd degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree.

Brothers was arraigned in the Town of Oswegatchie Court and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, a $10,000 bond, or a $25,000 partially secured bond.

Troopers continued the investigation and determined that Bruce Cayea and Makenzie Cayea were responsible for damaging the victim’s cellular phone during the altercation.

On June 21, 2026, Bruce Cayea and Makenzie Cayea voluntarily responded to SP Ogdensburg, where they were arrested and charged with Harassment 2nd degree (physical contact) and Criminal Mischief 3rd degree.

Both were issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Oswegatchie Court at a later date in August.
