Man charged with fraud in Canton

CANTON, NY — New York State Police charged Ryan P. Clement, 40, of Potsdam, with two counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree and two counts of issuing a bad check on June 16, 2026.

Troopers responded to the Wood Chop Shop on Cowan Road in the town of Canton at approximately 6:18 p.m. on June 11, 2026, for a fraud complaint.

An investigation determined that Clement purchased merchandise valued at $1,182.58 using a check while knowing there were insufficient funds in the account associated with the check.

During the course of the investigation, troopers identified a second incident.

Troopers responded to a business on County Route 27 in the town of Canton on June 16, 2026, for a fraud complaint.

The investigation revealed that Clement purchased merchandise valued at $1,802.02 using a fraudulent check.

An arrest warrant was issued for Clement as a result of the investigations.

Members of the Potsdam Police Department subsequently took Clement into custody on an unrelated matter and notified State Police of his whereabouts.

Troopers responded and took custody of Clement, transporting him to SP Canton for processing.

Clement was arraigned in the Town of Canton Court and remanded to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility.
