Man arrested after pursuit, crash in Salamanca

SALAMANCA, NY — An 18-year-old man was arrested following a high-speed pursuit that ended in a crash June 17.

Jonathan S. Pickles, of Canandaigua, was taken into custody by deputies of the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office assigned to the Seneca Nation Allegany Territory.

At 11:19 p.m., Pickles passed deputies on Interstate 86 in the Town of Carrollton at a high rate of speed, according to the sheriff’s office.

Pickles failed to stop for the activated emergency lights and sirens on a deputy’s marked patrol car.

He continued at a high rate of speed on I-86 through construction zones in Carrollton, Great Valley and Salamanca, passing vehicles in the coned off area and on the right side of the road.

Pickles exited at Exit 21 and crashed his car into a ditch, hitting multiple signs and the guardrail.

Deputies discovered a juvenile in the vehicle when they made contact.

Pickles was evaluated by EMS and transported to Olean General Hospital.

He was processed and released on an appearance ticket for unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, reckless endangerment in the second degree and endangering the welfare of a child.

Pickles is due in the City of Salamanca Court at a later date.

He was also issued 13 uniform traffic tickets for return to the Town of Carrollton, Town of Great Valley and City of Salamanca courts.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the City of Salamanca Police Department, Seneca Nation Marshals, New York State Park Police, Seneca Nation EMS and City of Salamanca Fire/EMS.
