NEWBURY, VT — A mechanical failure led to a two-vehicle crash on US Route 5 South near Moore Hill Road on June 15, 2026.
Vermont State Police from the St. Johnsbury Barracks responded to the scene at approximately 3:53 p.m.
Troopers determined that a 2005 Toyota Tacoma operated by Werner Hegemann, 69, of Newbury, suffered a mechanical failure resulting in the loss of brakes.
The Toyota began to go off the west side of the road.
Hegemann turned east to get back onto the road, resulting in a collision with a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Michael Gusha, 51, of Bradford.
No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
The Toyota was totaled, while the Chevrolet sustained moderate front end damage.
Hegemann was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while Gusha was not.
Hegemann was issued a Vermont Civil Violation Complaint for violation of Title 23 VSA 1222.
Weather conditions were clear and the road was dry at the time of the crash.
Troopers were assisted by members of the Newbury Fire Department and Woodsville Ambulance.
