Man arrested in North Troy after fleeing traffic stop in stolen car

NORTH TROY — A Maine man was arrested Friday night after he fled a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle and was later found on foot in North Troy, Vermont State Police said.

Damian Emerson, 26, of Newfield, Maine, was charged with criminal driving with a suspended license, aggravated operating without the owner’s consent and eluding a law enforcement officer.

Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle at the intersection of Route 242 and Route 101 in Troy at about 9:54 p.m. after observing a traffic violation. The vehicle initially stopped but then fled, police said.

A short time later, troopers located the vehicle, a 2021 blue Nissan Altima with Maine registration, at the Troy Recreation Area off East Main Street in North Troy.

The only occupant was a female passenger, who identified the driver as Emerson and told police he had fled on foot.

The vehicle had been reported stolen several days earlier in Maine, according to police.

Emerson was located at the intersection of East Main Street and Pine Street in North Troy by the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department and taken into custody without incident.

He was lodged at the Northern State Correctional Facility on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear June 15 in Orleans District Court.
