BUTLER, NY — New York State Police have arrested two individuals following an investigation into a fire and burglary at the former Butler Correctional Facility in Wayne County.
On June 3, at approximately 4:04 p.m., State Police responded to the former Butler Correctional Facility on Westbury Cutoff Road after receiving reports that two individuals had entered the property and started fires inside one of the buildings.
The investigation determined that an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old unlawfully entered a maintenance building on the property.
While inside, the pair allegedly started multiple fires using paper and cardboard and spray-painted graffiti within the building.
Responding members of the Red Creek Fire Department extinguished several active fires, preventing further damage to the structure.
The 18-year-old was charged with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony; arson in the fourth degree, a class E felony; and criminal mischief in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor.
The 18-year-old was processed at State Police Wolcott and arraigned in Wayne County CAP Court.
The 17-year-old was charged with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony.
On June 9, the 17-year-old surrendered at State Police Lyons and was processed before being arraigned in Wayne County Youth Part Court.
He was released on his own recognizance.
