Man airlifted to hospital after fire in Washington Borough

WASHINGTON BOROUGH, NJ — A 42-year-old man was airlifted to a hospital after his clothing caught fire inside his apartment Monday afternoon.

The Washington Township Police Department responded to the area of 45 E. Washington Avenue at approximately 1:36 p.m. for a report of a male whose clothing was on fire.

Officers were also advised of a smoke condition in the area and a possible structure fire.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the man of Washington Borough who had been inside his apartment when the fire began.

The man sustained burn injuries and was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel before being airlifted to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Officers assisted with traffic control and the evacuation of nearby businesses as members of the Washington Borough Fire Department, Washington Township Fire Department and other responding agencies worked to bring the fire under control.

A preliminary investigation conducted by members of the Washington Township Police Department, the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office and the Washington Borough Fire Marshal’s Office revealed no suspicious findings at this time.

The Washington Township Police Department was assisted by the Washington Borough, Washington Township, Oxford Township, Mansfield Township, Tri-County and Belvidere Fire Departments, along with the Washington Emergency Squad, South Branch Emergency Squad, Warren County HazMat, NJSP NorthSTAR, the Warren County Communications Center and other responding agencies.

Several displaced individuals received assistance from the American Red Cross for temporary housing and related services as a result of the fire damage.
