EDDINGTON, ME — A Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office supervisor revived an unresponsive infant suffering from an opioid overdose May 31.

The Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a 911 call at approximately 2:28 p.m. reporting a cardiac arrest involving an infant at a residence on Clewleyville Road.

A supervisor was approximately one minute away when the call was received and responded immediately to the scene.

Upon arrival, the supervisor located the infant in the driveway with the child’s parents.

The infant was unresponsive, not breathing, and had no detectable pulse.

The supervisor immediately began administering CPR with assistance from one of the parents.

After determining the infant did not have an airway obstruction, additional information was presented that the child may have been suffering from an overdose involving an unknown substance.

He administered two doses of Narcan, an opioid reversal medication, while continuing lifesaving CPR efforts.

Immediately following the second dose of Narcan, the infant began showing signs of life and was successfully revived.

Eddington Fire & Rescue, Holden Fire & Rescue and Northern Light Ambulance Service arrived on scene and assisted with patient care.

The infant was transported to a local hospital for further treatment, and the presence of an opioid was detected.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services Child Protective Services.
