Juvenile arrested on vehicle theft charges in Gloucester City

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ — A 16-year-old was arrested after allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle in broad daylight.

Officers from the Gloucester City Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of North King Street at approximately 11 a.m. June 5 for a report of an attempted motor vehicle theft.

The victim told police he heard his vehicle’s anti-theft alarm activate while he was inside a nearby building.

When he went outside, he observed the rear driver’s-side window of his vehicle had been smashed and an unknown male was sitting in the driver’s seat.

The victim confronted the suspect, who fled the area on foot.

The Gloucester City Detective Bureau assumed the investigation and identified the suspect as a 16-year-old male from Gloucester City.

Detectives determined the same juvenile was involved in multiple motor vehicle thefts within Gloucester City approximately two weeks earlier.

The 16-year-old from Gloucester City was charged with attempted theft of a motor vehicle and burglary, both third-degree offenses.

The complaint was placed on a summons according to New Jersey juvenile charging guidelines.
