BINGHAMTON, NY — A Binghamton man is facing felony charges after allegedly threatening corrections officers with a knife during a court transport.
Nicolas G. Arias, 23, of Binghamton, was arrested June 3 and charged with two counts of menacing a peace officer, a class D felony, obstructing governmental administration, a class A misdemeanor, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor.
The incident occurred on the morning of June 2 as two corrections officers were transporting an incarcerated individual from Supreme Court in downtown Binghamton back to the correctional facility.
While escorting the individual to the transport vehicle, the officers were confronted by an irate man who began berating and threatening them, according to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.
The corrections officers immediately secured the incarcerated individual in the transport vehicle.
The man then escalated the situation by advancing toward the officers while pulling out a knife and threatening them, authorities said.
The officers were able to get into the transport vehicle and safely remove themselves and the incarcerated individual from the area.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division, with assistance from the Corrections Investigation Unit and Broome Security Division, identified Arias as the suspect.
Members of the Detective Division and Strategic Response Group located Arias in Binghamton on June 3 and took him into custody.
Arias was arraigned at CAP court on the evening of June 3 and was released on his own recognizance.
