WILKINSBURG, PA — A man died following an officer-involved shooting near the intersection of Swissvale Avenue and Ross Avenue.
County 9-1-1 was notified of the shooting at 4:21 p.m.
Preliminary information indicates a Wilkinsburg police officer was patrolling the area when he encountered an adult male with a gun in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue.
According to witnesses, the male approached the police vehicle armed with a handgun.
The officer exited the vehicle and made numerous commands for the male to drop the weapon.
The officer then opened fire a short time later, striking the male in the chest.
The male was transported to an area hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased.
The Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner will provide further identifying information.
Allegheny County Police are investigating the incident.
