DUI arrest after crash on Interstate 89 in Waterbury

WATERBURY, VT — Vermont State Police arrested a driver on suspicion of DUI following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 North on May 24, 2026.

Troopers responded to the crash near mile marker 64.8 at 4:24 p.m.

Police determined Deborah Freeman, 61, of Barre, was driving northbound in the travel lane when she turned left in front of Christine Dorer, 49, of Roxbury, who was driving in the passing lane.

Freeman was attempting to use the U-turn to go southbound, according to police.

Dorer’s vehicle struck Freeman’s vehicle.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.

Freeman was driving a 2007 Ford Freestyle that sustained extensive rear-end damage.

Dorer was driving a 2019 Subaru Ascent that sustained extensive front-end damage.

Freeman suffered minor injuries.

A passenger in Dorer’s vehicle, Rhett Williams, 48, of Roxbury, suffered minor non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Central Vermont Medical Center.

Both Freeman and Dorer were wearing seat belts.

Further investigation determined Freeman was under the influence of intoxicants.

She was taken into custody and processed at the Berlin Barracks.

Freeman was later released with a citation to appear in Washington Superior Court – Criminal Division on a charge of DUI.

The Waterbury Fire Department and Waterbury Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.

Roads were wet and it was raining at the time of the crash.
