Woman assaulted with shovel in Ellenville

ELLENVILLE, NY — A woman was struck with a shovel during a domestic dispute on North Main Street on May 20, 2026.

The Ellenville Police Department responded to a call for a reported domestic dispute and assault at 18 North Main Street at about 6 p.m.

Upon arrival, police determined that Kelly Smith, 43, of Ellenville, had struck the victim with a shovel during the dispute, causing physical injuries.

Smith is a level 3 sex offender.

The victim was transported to Ellenville Hospital by Ellenville Rescue Squad, where she was treated and released.

Smith was arrested and charged with assault in the second degree, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.

He was processed and taken to Ulster County CAP for arraignment.

Smith was remanded to the Ulster County Jail.
