KINGSBURY, NY — Washington County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Cohoes man in connection with a vehicle crashing into a building and a separate structure fire Thursday morning in the Town of Kingsbury, authorities said.
Deputies were dispatched at about 4:12 a.m. to the Hudson River Community Credit Union on Burgoyne Avenue for a building alarm, according to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy.
When deputies arrived, they found that a vehicle had struck the building and that the driver had fled on foot, Murphy said.
A K9 search was started in the surrounding area, and a person of interest was located and taken into custody, authorities said.
While deputies and investigators were still working at that scene, a separate call came in at about 7:58 a.m. reporting a structure fire involving a small building on Devine Drive, not far from the first incident, Murphy said.
When an investigator arrived at the fire scene, a subject matching the description from the earlier vehicle incident was seen in nearby woods, authorities said.
That person was identified as John W. Bacon, 40, of Cohoes.
After an investigation, Bacon was linked to both the motor vehicle crash and the fire, according to the sheriff’s office.
Bacon was charged with fourth-degree arson, a class E felony; fourth-degree criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor; and third-degree criminal trespass, a class B misdemeanor.
He was processed at the Washington County Law Enforcement Center in Fort Edward and arraigned through centralized arraignment, authorities said.
Bacon was sent to the Washington County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.
He is due in Kingsbury Court at a later date.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges related to the motor vehicle incident are expected, authorities said.
