BATH, NY — Two Bath residents have been charged in connection with the death of a 12-day-old infant on May Street, police said.

Bath police said officers and members of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 8 a.m. March 18 to a report of an unresponsive infant.

Bath Ambulance and Steuben County EMS also responded to the scene.

Police said officers administered CPR before the infant was taken by ambulance to Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined the death resulted from negligence involving unsafe sleep arrangements for the infant, police said.

Dakota J. Abeel, 27, of Bath, and Jessica A. Abeel, 23, of Bath, were each charged with one count of criminally negligent homicide, a Class E felony.

Police said both were processed and released and are scheduled to appear in Bath Village Court at a later date.

Bath police said the investigation involved assistance from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Steuben County 911, the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office, Bath Ambulance, Steuben County Child Protective Services and Steuben County EMS.
