WARRENSBURG, NY — A 21-year-old kayaker who went missing in the Schroon River has been found dead, State Police said.
Sohail A. Nabi of Yonkers was located deceased in approximately 12 feet of water on May 11 at about 5:55 p.m., according to police.
Nabi had been kayaking with a small group of people in the Schroon River when they lost sight of him.
While looking for him, his capsized kayak was located, and 911 was contacted.
State Police responded to the area of Library Avenue in Warrensburg on May 10 at about 8:04 p.m. for the report of an overturned kayak in the Schroon River.
Nabi was located approximately 22 hours after the kayak was discovered, about 100 feet from the capsized kayak by the Troop G Underwater Recovery Unit.
The Warren County Marine Rescue Team and the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team searched the area into the early morning hours before resuming the search later.
During the investigation, State Police were assisted by the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Company, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, the Warren County Marine Rescue Team, the North Queensbury Volunteer Fire Company and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
The investigation is ongoing, and the cause of death is pending autopsy.
