WINSLOW, ME — A man was arrested Friday in connection with a 1987 homicide in Westbrook.
Stephen Bouchard, 63, of Winslow, was taken into custody at approximately 2:17 p.m. on a murder charge.
The arrest stems from the death of Alice Hawkes, whose body was found on October 4, 1987, in a Westbrook apartment.
Bouchard was Hawkes’ live-in boyfriend at the time of her death and shared the apartment with her.
A Cumberland County Grand Jury issued an indictment against Bouchard on Thursday.
Hawkes’ death was ruled a homicide, and State Police and Westbrook Police detectives conducted a comprehensive investigation at the time.
The case eventually went cold but continued to be reviewed by detectives over the years.
In 2025, the Major Crimes Unit-Unsolved initiated a full reinvestigation of the case.
The reinvestigation led the Maine Attorney General’s Office to seek a murder charge against Bouchard.
Following his arrest, Bouchard was taken to the Cumberland County Jail, where he will be arraigned in the near future.
Detectives from the State Police Major Crimes Unit-Unsolved and Major Crimes Unit-South made the arrest.
