Fire under investigation in Rumford

RUMFORD, ME — The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fire that heavily damaged a duplex early Thursday morning.

The Rumford Fire Department responded to 501 Virgin Street at approximately 4:55 a.m. April 30 for a reported smoke investigation.

Additional 911 calls reported heavy fire coming from the building while crews were preparing to respond.

Fire crews arrived and observed heavy fire conditions on the first, second, and third floors of the duplex.

One side of the duplex was under construction, while the other side was occupied by a family of four and two dogs.

All occupants and pets escaped safely, with no injuries reported.

The occupants were alerted by functioning smoke detectors.

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
