NORWALK, CT — A man found sleeping in a stairwell was arrested after police discovered he was carrying a loaded assault rifle, authorities said.
Patrol officers responded to 97 Richards Avenue at 6:12 p.m. April 30, 2026, for a report of a suspicious person.
Officers found an unknown male sleeping in the rear stairwell of the building.
The man, identified as Lance R. Jones, 22, of Norwalk, initially provided a false name to officers, police said.
During the investigation, officers determined Jones was in possession of an AR-15 assault rifle inside his backpack.
The rifle was loaded with a 60-round magazine, according to police.
Jones did not possess a firearms permit.
He was charged with possession of an assault weapon, possession of a large capacity magazine, carrying a pistol without a permit and interfering with an officer.
Jones was held on $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 15, 2026.
