BANGOR, ME — Maine State Police said troopers responded at about 11:49 a.m. Saturday to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 395 westbound near the Main Street overpass.

Witnesses reported that a black Ford Mustang struck a Volkswagen coupe, causing the coupe to spin out, leave the roadway into the grass gore, cross the entering ramp from Main Street, roll over the guardrail and go down an embankment into the woods.

The driver of the coupe, a 20-year-old woman from Chester, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Police said the Mustang spun out into the concrete Jersey barrier in the median, and the driver was seen walking away from the scene.

Troopers and local agencies canvassed the area for the male driver but did not find him.

State police said a photo submitted to the Maine State Police 411-Tip Line showed a man fleeing the scene.

Police said the person in the photo matched the description of the Mustang’s registered owner, David Harris, 48, of Brewer.

Troopers located and arrested Harris at about 7:40 a.m. Sunday at his apartment in Brewer, police said.

He was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash with injury, aggravated driving to endanger, failure to make an oral accident report and operating without a license.

Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
