BINGHAMTON, NY — A fight near Binghamton High School led to the arrest of two people on weapon charges after a school resource officer observed a handgun being passed between individuals.
On April 23 at approximately 3:10 p.m., the Binghamton Police School Resource Officer assigned to Binghamton High School notified Broome Communications of a physical fight he observed ongoing across Main Street near the intersection of Oak and Main streets.
The officer responded on foot and observed two males actively engaging in a physical confrontation on the ground.
As he approached, both males began to flee the area on foot and were pursued by the officer.
The officer observed one of the males enter an alleyway between buildings at 50 and 52 Main St.
While in the alleyway, the officer observed the suspect, later identified as Ramier I. Rainey, 18, of Binghamton, in possession of a handgun that he passed to another individual in the alley.
This individual was not one of the original combatants.
Rainey again fled the alley on foot and a 14-year-old male who had received the firearm was taken into custody by the officer and brought to Binghamton Police Headquarters.
The other combatant involved in the original disturbance fled the area before additional police personnel arrived.
The firearm recovered was a loaded semi-automatic handgun that was an un-serialized privately made firearm, commonly referred to as a “ghost gun,” which is illegal to possess in New York State.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., Rainey surrendered himself to Binghamton Police detectives.
Rainey was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, criminal possession of a firearm, a class E felony, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor.
The 14-year-old was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a class C felony, criminal possession of a firearm, a class E felony, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor.
Rainey was held in Binghamton Police custody to await arraignment before Binghamton City Court.
