Man arrested on drug charges in Rockland

ROCKLAND, NY — A Rochester man faces felony drug charges following a traffic stop on State Route 17.

Yassir Ali Mohamed Sharhan, 40, of Rochester, was arrested April 15 by New York State Police.

Sharhan was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 2nd degree, a class A-II felony; criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 3rd degree, intent to sell, a class B felony; and operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs, 1st offense, an unclassified misdemeanor.

Troopers from State Police Roscoe initiated a traffic stop at approximately 7:48 p.m. on a 2026 Kia traveling westbound on State Route 17 in the town of Rockland for a violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Troopers interviewed Sharhan, who was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.

During the investigation, troopers determined that Sharhan was impaired by khat, a stimulant.

A search of the vehicle yielded approximately 432 grams of khat.

Sharhan was taken into custody and transported to State Police Liberty for processing without incident.

Sharhan was arraigned in the Town of Rockland Court and remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.

He is scheduled to return to the Town of Rockland Court on April 21 at 3:00 p.m.
