KINGSTON, NY — The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers impersonating deputies.
The agency has received complaints of individuals being contacted by phone by people claiming to be members of the sheriff’s office with instructions on how to bail someone out of jail.
The sheriff’s office said it will never contact anyone by phone to solicit payments for any reason.
Government entities will never request payments be made with gift cards or currency apps such as Venmo or CashApp, according to the warning.
Anyone who believes they are a victim of the scam should contact the sheriff’s office dispatch at (845) 338-3640 to report it.
