WEST HAVEN, CT — A West Haven man has been arrested following a lengthy investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds from online gambling events purportedly benefiting high school sports programs.

Salvatore Carfora, 55, of West Haven, was taken into custody and charged with larceny in the first degree.

The investigation was conducted by the West Haven Police Department’s Investigative Services Division, Financial Crimes/Fraud Unit, in collaboration with the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney’s Forensic Fraud Examiner and the Office of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Milford.

The case originated from a complaint regarding Facebook “cash wheel” events run by Carfora between August 2020 and May 2022.

The events were purportedly organized to benefit the West Haven High School hockey team and other high school sports programs.

Investigators determined that more than $39,000 collected through these events was allegedly misappropriated.

The intended recipients, the high school sports teams, did not receive the benefits advertised to “cash wheel” participants, according to investigators.

An arrest warrant was issued for Carfora as a result of the investigation.

He was charged with larceny in the first degree, in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-122.
