TRENTON, NJ — A 32-year-old man faces multiple charges after police say he discarded a loaded handgun while fleeing on a bicycle.
Markese McClain was arrested April 8 at Hudson Street and Hamilton Avenue.
Officers Romero and Tosado were patrolling the area of Pearl and Hudson Streets at approximately 6:38 p.m. when they observed a group alert McClain to their presence.
McClain immediately mounted a bicycle and quickly pedaled away, according to police.
The officers followed McClain and observed him manipulating an object in his front waistband.
Police say McClain removed a handgun from his waistband and threw it over a fence.
Officers took McClain into custody without incident moments after he discarded the weapon.
Police retrieved the handgun, which was loaded with .38 caliber ammunition.
A search incident to arrest found McClain was in possession of Naloxone, for which he did not have a prescription, according to police.
McClain was also found to have an active warrant out of Trenton for simple assault.
McClain was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon under the No Early Release Act, certain person not to possess a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest and hindering apprehension.
Police say McClain provided a false name when asked for identification.
He was lodged pending court proceedings.
