YONKERS, NY — A man died at a hospital after becoming unresponsive following his arrest during an active assault at an apartment building on April 7, 2026, according to the Yonkers Police Department.
Police received a call at approximately 7:15 p.m. from a woman reporting a male armed with a knife was attacking several people inside an apartment at 165 Bruce Avenue.
Responding officers arrived to find an ongoing assault in the entryway, where a male was attacking a resident.
Officers deployed a Taser, which was ineffective, according to police.
A second Taser was deployed but was also unsuccessful.
Officers then moved in and stopped the attack without escalating force and placed the suspect in handcuffs, police said.
The suspect became unresponsive shortly after being handcuffed.
Officers and emergency medical personnel immediately rendered medical aid, and the suspect was transported to an area hospital.
The man was pronounced deceased at the hospital despite lifesaving efforts.
The name of the suspect is not being released pending family notifications.
The Yonkers Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division immediately initiated an investigation and notified the New York State Attorney General’s Office in accordance with standard protocol.
Preliminary investigation based on victim statements, witness statements and body-worn camera video revealed the suspect had been using drugs with a friend before violently attacking two victims, according to police.
Victims sustained significant injuries, including bite wounds and blunt-force trauma inflicted with household objects, including a frying pan and a metal stovetop grate, as well as a laceration consistent with a sharp instrument.
The preliminary findings indicate the only force used by responding officers was two unsuccessful Taser deployments, and that no physical strikes or impact weapons were used, police said.
An autopsy is currently underway.
Several significant underlying medical conditions were identified during the examination, which may have contributed to the death, according to police.
Toxicology results are pending.
The Internal Affairs Division will continue its investigation in coordination with the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
