Man arrested after gunfire exchange in Somersworth

SOMERSWORTH, NH — A Somersworth man faces felony charges after an early morning gunfire exchange on Depot Street left a vehicle and home damaged but no one injured.

The Somersworth Police Department Emergency Communications Center received multiple 911 calls at approximately 1:21 a.m. April 4 reporting possible shots in the area of Depot Street.

Responding officers located an address where the altercation allegedly took place and secured the scene.

Several spent casings and live rounds were located on the street in front of and several hundred feet down the road from the residence in question.

Officers also located a vehicle and a separate home struck by gunfire.

The entire area was cordoned off into the early morning hours while the incident was being investigated.

No injuries were reported.

Robert Stiffler, 48, of Somersworth, was charged with reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, both felonies.

He is being held on preventative detention until his arraignment April 6.

Multiple firearms were also seized during the investigation.

It was reported that three other suspects involved fled the scene and headed into Maine.

Additional arrests are expected.

The Somersworth police are asking anyone in the area of Depot and Union streets to check their security cameras to see if the incident may have been captured.
