SIDNEY, NY — New York State Police arrested a Ninevah man on multiple felony charges following an investigation into a reported stolen vehicle.
Adam L. Smith, 44, of Ninevah, was arrested March 28, 2026, by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Sidney.
Smith was charged with possession of a forged instrument in the 2nd degree, a class D felony; grand larceny in the 4th degree (motor vehicle), a class E felony; criminal tax fraud in the 4th degree, a class E felony; falsifying business records in the 1st degree, a class E felony; offering a false instrument for filing in the 1st degree (intent to defraud), a class E felony; and false written statement, a misdemeanor.
On March 12, a trooper was dispatched to a report of a 2002 Ford F-250 Super Cab stolen from a driveway on Cooper School House Road in Bainbridge.
Several hours after the initial report, troopers spoke to Smith, who stated he had seen a social media post about the stolen vehicle and claimed he was in possession of the truck.
Smith reported that he purchased the truck in January 2026 but was unable to immediately take possession of it.
He further stated that he returned on March 11 to retrieve the truck from the residence where it had been reported stolen.
An investigation determined that the truck was registered to both Smith and to the victim in Bainbridge.
Further investigation revealed that Smith stole the truck, illegally obtained the title and forged the owner’s signature, which he submitted to the Department of Motor Vehicles in order to register the truck.
Additionally, Smith provided false statements to troopers regarding the alleged purchase of the truck.
Smith was processed at SP Sidney and transported to the Delaware County Jail for centralized arraignment.
He is scheduled to appear at the Guilford Town Court on April 28, 2026, to answer to the grand larceny and false written statement charges.
Smith will appear in the Sidney Village Court at a later date to answer to the other four felony charges.
