Man arrested on assault charge in Cohoes

COHOES, NY — State Police arrested a Malta man on March 27, 2026, on charges stemming from an alleged assault at a high school in January.

Michael J. Torturo, 41, of Malta, was taken into custody with assistance from the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

He faces charges of second-degree assault, a class D felony, endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, and second-degree menacing, a class B misdemeanor.

Troopers responded to Tamarac High School in Brunswick on Jan. 21, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m. for a report of an altercation.

The investigation determined that Torturo, who was at the school for a youth athletic event, allegedly struck a school maintenance worker following a verbal altercation.

The incident occurred in the presence of a child under the age of 16.

Torturo fled the location on foot following the incident.

A search of the area was unsuccessful in locating him.

The school employee sustained significant injuries and was transported to Samaritan Hospital for medical treatment.

Brunswick Town Court issued an arrest warrant for Torturo on Jan. 23, 2026.

Following his arrest, Torturo was transported to State Police Brunswick for processing.

He was arraigned at Brunswick Town Court and remanded to the Rensselaer County Correctional Facility without bail.
