Police respond to report of armed person at temple in Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Police responded to a report of a suspicious armed person at Temple Ner Tamid on Broad Street on March 26, 2026.

Officers quickly determined the armed individual was a security guard employed by the temple.

Police said there was no threat to public safety.

Police Chief George Ricci said the department remains committed to ensuring safe environments for residents and that officers are equipped and trained to address active threats.

Ricci said the incident was not an actual threat but asked the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.

Mayor Jenny Mundell said she was relieved the incident was a false alarm and thanked police for their swift response.

Mundell said the town remains committed to the safety of all houses of worship in Bloomfield and stands firmly against antisemitism and all forms of hate.

Temple Ner Tamid houses the Shoresh preschool.

Police encourage the public to report suspicious activity and said every concern will be investigated.
