CHEMUNG COUNTY, NY — A Cortland man wanted in Indiana on felony charges was arrested by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office.
Eric W. Smith, 42, of Cortland, was taken into custody as a fugitive from justice on an outstanding warrant from Nobel County, Indiana.
Smith faces charges in Indiana of threat to commit a forcible felony and impersonation of a public servant-law enforcement officer.
The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office received notification from the Chemung County Probation Office that Smith had an outstanding warrant through Indiana.
On March 24, 2026, at about 5 p.m., sheriff’s office road patrol received notification from the probation department that Smith was at their office.
Smith was arrested and processed as a fugitive from justice.
He was arraigned in the Town of Ashland Court and remanded to the Chemung County Jail, awaiting extradition to Indiana.
