FAIRFIELD, NJ — A Kentucky woman was arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop early Monday morning on Route 46 West.
Kayla Casterline, 33, of Elsmere, Kentucky, was charged with possession of Gabapentin, Xylazine and drug paraphernalia.
Officer Carmelo Caramanna conducted a motor vehicle stop on a Dodge Charger at approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday for an equipment violation.
During the stop, Casterline, who was a passenger, and the driver told police they had driven to Paterson for the weekend to visit friends and were returning to Kentucky.
Officers observed both occupants appeared nervous and moved around frequently in the vehicle.
A K-9 unit from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department was called to the scene.
The dog gave a positive indication for the presence of narcotics in the vehicle, according to police.
A search of the vehicle revealed narcotics and drug paraphernalia.
The driver was issued summonses and released from the scene.
Casterline was arrested and transported to Fairfield police headquarters for processing.
She was then transported to the Essex County Jail pending a first court appearance.
