NEWPORT — A Newport man was arrested Thursday evening after police say he kicked, headbutted a cruiser, spit on officers and attempted to bite them following a fight on the Newport Boardwalk.
Geromy J. Wells, 41, was charged with two counts of assault of a protected professional — including one count involving bodily fluids — as well as obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct and violation of conditions of release.
Newport Police responded to the boardwalk at about 7:17 p.m. for a report of a fight. Officers found Wells, who appeared to be extremely intoxicated, and took him into protective custody, according to the department.
Once in custody, Wells became aggressive, kicking and headbutting the police cruiser, making verbal threats and spitting at officers, police said. He continued to act aggressively during transport to North Country Hospital for medical clearance, spitting on and attempting to bite officers.
Wells was cleared and transported to the Northern State Correctional Facility.
Police said a subsequent investigation found that Wells had appeared in court in June and was issued conditions of release prohibiting violent, threatening or tumultuous behavior. He has 13 prior convictions, according to the department.
Wells was scheduled to appear Friday in Orleans District Court.
