GEORGIA, VT — Vermont State Police have identified two people who drowned in the Lamoille River near Arrowhead Mountain Lake as siblings from Cambridge.
The victims are Yazmin Yupangui, 11, and her brother, Sandro Lala, 25, both of Cambridge.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington determined their deaths were the result of accidental drownings following autopsies completed Monday.
The incident occurred at about 7:50 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Highbridge Road and Arrowhead Lake Road.
A group of relatives were fishing along the shore when Yazmin fell into the water, and Lala jumped in to try to rescue her.
Neither resurfaced.
A kayaker found Lala’s body on Arrowhead Mountain Lake at about 6:40 a.m. Saturday.
Troopers and the Milton Fire Department responded to the scene and brought the body to shore.
Members of the Vermont State Police Underwater Recovery Team located Yazmin’s body at about 5:40 p.m. Thursday.
Search efforts were complicated by strong thunderstorms that caused water levels to rise and strengthened currents.
Agencies involved in the search included fire departments from Fairfax, Georgia and Milton; Colchester Technical Rescue; Fairfax Rescue; and multiple components of the Vermont State Police.
