FARMINGTON, ME — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about phone scammers impersonating law enforcement officials.
The sheriff’s office received numerous complaints this morning about calls from someone identifying themselves as “Lieutenant Stevens” from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Other residents reported receiving calls about a failure to appear warrant for jury duty.
The sheriff’s office said both types of calls are scams.
The agency does not have a Lieutenant Stevens on staff.
Deputies would never call demanding money be paid to avoid arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.
Residents who receive such calls should block the number and alert friends and family about the scam.
The sheriff’s office warned residents not to provide personal information or banking information to the callers.
Anyone who provided banking information should immediately contact their bank to cancel the card or account.
