SCHUYLER, NY — A Massachusetts man faces felony weapons charges following a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway.
Troopers assigned to State Police Troop T, SP Schuyler and Troop D Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested an 18-year-old male on June 26, 2026.
Just after 10:30 a.m., troopers from SP Schuyler observed a 2026 Hyundai sedan traveling eastbound on the New York State Thruway in violation of vehicle and traffic laws and conducted a traffic stop.
The driver was identified as a 16-year-old male from Massachusetts with a learner’s permit, and the passenger was identified as an 18-year-old male, also from Massachusetts.
During the investigation, with the assistance of State Police K9 Ash, troopers located a plastic container with a powdery substance, later confirmed to be ketamine, a prescription container with a missing label containing gabapentin, along with a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol and ammunition.
Both vehicle occupants were transported to SP Schuyler for processing.
The 16-year-old male was issued tickets for the vehicle and traffic violations and released to an adult family member due to his juvenile status.
The 18-year-old male was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, 2nd degree, a felony, and criminal possession of a controlled substance, 7th degree, a misdemeanor.
The subject was arraigned in Herkimer Village Court and remanded to Herkimer County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash, $50,000 bond or $50,000 partially secured bond.
He is due for a preliminary hearing in Schuyler Town Court on June 29, 2026.
