Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash in West Rutland

WEST RUTLAND, VT — Vermont State Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian early Thursday morning.

Troopers from the Rutland Barracks were notified at approximately 5:25 a.m. June 26 of a deceased male lying in the grass off the north side of Main Street.

Through investigation, police determined the victim was walking west on Main Street near Whipple Hollow Road when he was struck by a passing vehicle.

The operator and vehicle failed to stop and have yet to be identified.

The victim was identified as Devin Pierro, 30, of West Rutland.

Pierro was pronounced deceased at the scene and transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington.

The crash occurred during rainy weather and wet road conditions.

Police said the striking vehicle sustained damage to the passenger side headlight area.

The Vermont State Police were assisted by the Vermont State Police Crash Investigation Unit, West Rutland Fire Department, Regional Ambulance Service and the Vermont State Police Victim Services Unit.
